Arriving at Oneness

The concept of oneness can be difficult for the mind to comprehend.
How can everything be one when there is a clear separation between objects?
How can we all be one when our physical body and mental experiences are different compared to someone else's?
What do mystics mean when they say, 'All is one' or 'We are all expression of the same essence'?

Vedanta (a school of Indian philosophy) makes several claims about the oneness or non-duality i.e. there is no 'this' and 'that' but only one. According to Vedanta teachings (and Yoga philosophy) while experiences can vary the experiencer is only one, and this 'one' is you.
You are the essence of the universe, living through all manifested beings including the being that has your name, your body and your mental experience.
If this concept boggles your mind, you are not alone. Mind is subject to categorisation and sequential thinking. However, Vedanta's (and Yoga's) advise on how to comprehend this claim of 'oneness' is not by analysis but by direct experience. It is only when we can eat an orange ourselves can we truly know what an orange is, no amount of hearing from others or reading encyclopaedias will provide us the 'knowing'. This direct experience takes away all the doubts and provides the context for our minds to settle.
On the 26th of April, the BMS Sangha is meeting for a full day meditation and philosophy gathering, where we practise meditation, chanting and philosophy discussions.
The focus for this month's gathering is unpacking the concept of 'consciousness is one'.
We would love your company and participation on this day. The event is included in Sangha membership or can be purchased for a small donation. Book your spot via event link here, and we look forward to spending a thought provoking and heartfelt day with you!
Love,
BMS Sangha
