Is Meditation Yoga?
There is often a confused looks on people's faces when meditation is described as yoga. In the modern world, 'yoga' is seen as a strictly body-oriented practise that leads to fitness and mental health benefits. It is seen in the same light as how exercise is seen as beneficial for body and mind.
Hence when I teach meditation classes and bring the philosophical discourses of yoga science, there is confused looks as if saying, "Hang on a minute, meditation is yoga???"

Yes, meditation is yoga. In fact, without meditation, everything else that is taught within the yoga system is devoid of its original purpose.
The loss of contact with the intangible inner world, has the majority of adults in today's world sceptical about anything beyond matter and thoughts. Therefore, meditation is viewed with trepidation and often left out of the yoga system.
According to the teachings of Yoga the purpose and the meaning of Yoga practise is to connect the individual consciousness ('Atma' in Sanskrit) with unified consciousness ('Brahma'): a state of awareness where we can fully comprehend the existential mysteries and the meaning of life.
How this is done is through systematic cleansing of body, thoughts, emotions and energetic imprint. The process is to reverse the impact of growing up in world that is ignorant of the immanent and the transcendental oneness in all of life. When the impact of this ignorance is reversed, we are left with a renewed enthusiasm and deep sense of connection with life.
